How to Spend a Perfect Day in Byron Bay

I moved to the Byron Shire in 2016, after years of visiting and falling in love with the area. Now, I have the privilege of helping others do the same as their Byron Bay Buyers Agent, helping them realise their dream and to help them find their perfect home. When I’m not busy helping clients find their ideal homes, I love exploring and finding the local spots that make Byron Bay special.

Byron Bay is the most easterly point in Australia and is an inspiring place to call home.

Clients often ask me to recommend my favourite places when they visit when thinking about making the move to the Bay and I thought I’d share a glimpse of what a perfect day here looks like for my family and me.

Whether you’re visiting for a day, or a week, or dreaming of staying forever, these are personal recommendations from someone who feels incredibly lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world.

I live in the Byron Shire hinterland, surrounded by beautiful greenery and open space. It’s the best of both worlds — I enjoy the peace of the countryside and waterfall's of the national park while being just a short drive from Byron’s beaches and vibrant town. Being a Buyer's Agent in Byron Bay is a demanding job, while I don’t often get the luxury of long holidays, I love that I can experience all the wonderful things this area has to offer whenever I have a free moment. It’s like having a holiday right where I live!

Make sure to keep an eye out for my upcoming posts, where I’ll explore nearby towns like Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby. There’s so much to see beyond Byron Bay and I can’t wait to show you why I love to call this whole region home.

Morning: Sunrise and Saltwater

There’s no better way to start the day than by getting out into the ocean. Even after all these years, it still feels like a treat. I’m not a surfer, but I love a morning swim — it’s such a glorious way to wake up. The fresh sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the cool water are unbeatable. Getting back to my desk after an early swim always sets my day up perfectly.

Another favourite is a morning walk along Belongil Beach— especially because my dogs can come along too. It’s one of Byron’s best dog-friendly beaches. There’s something so special about seeing the sun rise over the water, coffee in hand and it's something we love to do as a family.

Breakfast and Browsing

After working up an appetite, it’s time for breakfast. My absolute favourite spot? Bayleaf Café on Marvel Street. Their Turkish eggs are incredible — perfectly poached with garlicky yoghurt, chilli butter, and fresh sourdough. The mushroom toast and their homemade Dukkah are great too. I can't fault their chocolatey flat white either!

Once I’m fueled up, a wander to Byron’s boutique stores is fun and easy to find something special to treat yourself. Mr Zimi is one of my go-to for vibrant, resort-style fashion but Rowie has great down-to-earth pieces you can pull out time and time again.

Mid-morning: Explore the Coast or Head Inland

I love heading off the beaten track nearby- Broken Head Beach Track is a quieter spot just south of Byron, with stunning views and a beautiful, more secluded beach. If you’re up for it, pack a snorkel — there are plenty of fish to see around the rocky coves. If time is tight then just a wander from Belongil to Main Beach, or to Wategos. The beaches are all special, and you'll know where to go depending on the breeze for the best spot.

But some days, it’s the Byron Hinterland calling. Just a short drive inland, you’ll find rolling hills, Waterfalls, and incredible views. There’s fresh air, quiet roads, and plenty of quirky Air B and B's if you’re planning to stay.

Lunch and Local Vibes

After a morning of exploring, it’s time for lunch. If I’m still by the beach, I’ll head to Top Shop for a burger and one of their homemade macadamia milk iced coffees. Sitting on the grassy patch outside, surrounded by locals and soaking in the laid-back vibe, it’s the epitome of Byron.

If the weather’s cooler, I can’t resist a comforting bowl of chowder from Fishheads right by Main Beach. There’s nothing like warming up with a delicious meal while watching the waves roll in.

Afternoon:

Lighthouse Walk and

Ice Cream Treats

No day in Byron Bay is complete without a visit to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. The walk-up is one of my favourite things to do — the views are breathtaking, and there’s always the chance of spotting dolphins or whales during the migration season. It’s no wonder so many locals still make the climb regularly.

And after that? Ice cream at Frankies! You won't see the ice cream until they lift the lid, but I promise you can’t go wrong. My personal favourite is the pecan maple biscotti with a generous swirl of caramel sauce. Heaven.

Active experiences in Byron Bay

Hire a stand-up paddle board here and explore the bay,  or at the other end of the spectrum, adventure junkies will love the snorkelling and diving at Julian Rocks. Book a tour to go Whale Watching and see the Whales that come to see us year after year and use the bay as a nursery to teach their calves.

If you are looking for an incredible experience to remember, then why not try- Hot Air Ballooning and see the magic of the shire from great heights.

Evening: Music, Markets, and Magical Moments

One of the things I love most about Byron is the creative energy that flows through the town. On most evenings, you’ll find talented buskers performing along Main Beach. Sitting on the grassy bank, watching the sunset with music in the background — it’s a little moment of magic.

If it’s a market day, you’re in for a treat. The Byron Bay Twilight Markets are a favourite of mine, with so many local artisans selling handmade crafts, jewellery, and art. It’s the perfect place to pick up a keepsake or a gift. And for a bit of fun, why not get a tarot reading? Byron has plenty of spiritual charm; whether you believe in it or not, it’s all part of the experience. You can also get lots of different foods as well, all from around the globe, and usually there's great music too.

Dinner and Drinks

When it comes to dinner, Casa Luna is one of my top picks. The food is incredible, and the service always makes you feel at home. If I’m in the mood for something casual, I might grab a drink at the iconic

Beach Hotel.

With beachfront views and live music most nights, it’s a great spot to relax and soak up the Byron atmosphere.
