Mullumbimby (or Mullum to locals) is the kind of town where every moment feels warm and welcoming. As someone who’s lived here for over a decade, I would love to share how to spend a perfect day here...

Start with a stroll to
The Other Joint

a cute café tucked in a lush courtyard garden. You’re sipping house-roasted coffee beneath hanging ferns and you'll feel like you're eating breakfast in a secret garden.
Feeling like something different? try a Chai latte at Pan Asian style cafe, Rock and Roll Cafe. Don't miss their signature dish "Kurasawa eggs" on their all day breakfast menu and enjoy the quiet and pretty courtyard setting with boutique shops nearby like

Explore local shops and Boutiques
After breakfast, the main street of Mullumbimby is just waking up. Window-shop at quirky local boutiques and pop into Haven Botanical Florists
(at 22 Burringbar Street) an incredible Bougie florist with crystal-infused botanical perfumes and feel-good wellness goods, or wander through the Made in Mullum artisan collective for handmade art, clothing and trinkets.
Don’t miss the old-fashioned Mullumbimby Chocolate Shop for a chewy nougat or local fudge – it’s the kind of place where children line up in turn to pick out their favourites every Friday and is in no doubt a Mullumbimby institution!
Looking for something special for your Home? One of my favourite store's is boutique interiors Shop, Cactus Hill Project and you’ll find a
curated wonderland of interior pieces, stunning furniture, cushions and everything you could ever need here to take your home to the next level!
Take Time to visit one of Mullumbimby's Bathhouses
I love that these beautiful bath houses are on my doorstep and I make sure I take time out to use them- every time I walk out I feel amazing!
The Banya Bathhouse & Spa invites you to soak in Moroccan tiled baths, (there an icy one for those of you that are brave!) and the lap pool for gentle exercise. Try the wood-fired sauna and steam room, both are pretty invigorating! Just down the street, The kiva spa offers a rainforest-themed sauna, steam room and mineral baths. Both places feel tropical, with palms and ferns, and you can practically hear the sound of distant waves (Brunswick heads is only 10 minutes away).
A soak or massage here melts away any weekday stress. By late morning, you will feel refreshed and ready to explore more.
Visiting Mullumbimby on a Friday?.......
Friday mornings in Mullumbimby are magic- Join the
Mullum farmers market (at the Showgrounds on Main Arm Road, 7–11am). This award-winning market is bursting with colour: crates of heirloom tomatoes, fresh herbs, homemade granola, local honey – fresh sourdough and profiteroles from Scratch Patisserie, the choices are endless! A local hip-hop duo called The Versace Boys often plays lively tunes here, rapping about fruits and veggies and getting parents and kids dancing with their catchy beat. Grab a satay stick or warm Indonesian curries from the food stall, and sip on a smoothie as you mingle with growers who’ve farmed here for generations.

Lunch Time, Afternoon adventures and Local Gems
By lunchtime, you have options. One local favourite is
Mullumbimby Continental (28 Burringbar St), a cosmopolitan cafe with great foods and sharing plates. For something special, head to
Izakaya Yu Mullumbimby (a tiny Japanese eatery famous for Agadashi Tofu and Chicken Karrage – the kind of place where chefs nod as they craft each dish, and you wont be disappointed, its great quality food!

In the early afternoon, pop into the
Mullumbimby Community Gardens (156 Stuart Street). This volunteer-run oasis has herb spirals, vegetable beds, and even a children’s play garden and giant sandpit. It’s open to the public daily – you’ll often find locals chatting about organic gardening or yoga classes. (By Tuesday, they’re cooking up a tasty volunteer lunch to share, too!)
Feeling Active?
If you feel sporty or just social, drop by the Mullumbimby Tennis Club on Byron Street. Even if you don’t play, the courts have a great view of Mt. Chincogan looming to the west. On any afternoon you’ll see families rallying, teenagers practicing serves, and grandparents cheering from the sidelines – a very friendly village vibe. If its a hot day head down to our Olympic Pool on Jubilee Avenue- its a great place to cool off socialise and sunbathe on the grass check opening times and whats on at the Mullumbimby Swimming Pool website.

Out of town exploring?
For a change of scenery,
take a quick drive. Main Arm is just a few minutes away through rolling green hills. In Main Arm, the store sells coffee under a big Poinciana tree and has heaps of snacks to buy before going up to Mount Jerusalem national park. The walks here are amazing! In my opinion one of the best walks in Mount Jerusalem National Park my is Whiskey-Creek-walk and I am itching to do the new 4 day hike through Godwana Country from here to Minyon Falls Gidjuum-gulganyi-walk.

Exploring Mullumbimby's parks and Community Gardens
Take a wander down to Paddock Project (64 Argyle Street). It’s a community farm and market garden with a little cafe/kiosk surrounded by vegetable plots and fruit trees. Their barista makes one of the best coffees in town – try a turmeric latte on their sunny patio – and the eggs are sourced from their own chickens. You can stroll through the gardens, bump into local vegans picking lettuce, or buy freshly picked chard right from their stall. It feels as homey as visiting Grandma’s place, but with artisan bread in hand.
Nearby, you might spot the large red LOVE sign or bump into friends at they host music nights and workshops here well worth checking out. Mullumbimby is full of these little creative spots that surprise you around every corner.
Afternoon Walks and playgrounds for Children
From here, it’s easy to head to heritage-park by the Brunswick River for a gentle walk. The trail here is flat and follows the water’s edge under rainforest canopy. Families often wander with dogs and picnics; Heritage Park has BBQs and a playground too, so it’s a peaceful spot to digest your market treats and watch the world go by.
Where to eat out in Mullumbimby
Evening's exploring and Sunset Reflection
As the afternoon turns to evening, Mullumbimby’s warmth never cools. For dinner, you have wonderful choices. On Friday and Saturday nights, The Middle Pub comes alive with live music – locals and traveller's gather for pub classics -bangers & mash and a friendly ale and the stage is often graced by homegrown bands or folk singers.

Or visit Ottilies Pizza Mullumbimby for Pizza on sourdough bases and farm-fresh toppings that hit the spot after a busy day.
When dinner wraps up, take a slow stroll to watch the sunset. Locals have a habit of saying “Mullum owes you one great sunset” – because most evenings the sky erupts in orange and magenta behind Mount Chincogan (the dormant volcano cradling Mullum) and you'll barely hear yourself speak if the lorikeets are in the palms, its wildly noisy! It’s the kind of sight that makes you realise, “I’m really lucky to live here.”
As night falls, imagine the front lights going on in those charming Queenslander homes around town, with their big verandahs and gardens. Every corner of Mullum has its own story – a house built by a carpenter who loves jazz, a yard grown with herbs and native flowers, a pickup truck that always plays reggae as it slowly drives by.
I’ve talked about Mullumbimby as your perfect day, but it truly is my perfect day too – and one I often get to share with friends, neighbours, and my real estate clients who I am helping find their perfect home. As a local Byron Bay Buyers Agent, I see eyes light up when people feel this town’s spirit. My clients aren’t drawn here by skyscrapers or shopping malls; they come for community markets where names are remembered, for schools that nurture creative kids (more on those later), and for knowing the person at the next table is waving because they’re actually your neighbour. This authentic, boho-alternative vibe – truly a one off – is Mullumbimby’s Magic.
So there you have it: a day well-spent in Mullumbimby. By bedtime, you’ll agree it’s more than just a day trip destination. It’s a way of life. And that’s why so many people I work with end up calling this place home.
